A Study on the Serum Zinc, Copper and Iron Levels in Patients with Various Liver Diseases

Abstract
In order to study the levels of serum zinc, copper and iron in various liver diseases, concentrations of the above trace elements were evaluated in 165 healthy control group(80 males, 85 females), 19 healthy HBs Ag carriers(14 males, 5 females),
and in
175 liver disease patients(52 toxic hepatitis, 58 chronic alcoholic hepatitis 37 chronic hepatitis B, 19 liver cirrhosis, 5 hepatoma, 4 acute hepatitis B).
Inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer(ICP) was used for the detection of the trace elements.
The concentration of serum zinc was significantly decreased in patients with liver cirrhosis, hepatoma, chronic hepatitis B. and chronic alcoholic hepatitis, but serum copper was significantly elevated in patients with chronic alcoholic hepatitis
and
chronic hepatitis B.
The decreasing tendency of serum zinc concentration was more prominent than the increasing tendency of serum copper, especially in hepatoma and liver cirrhosis.
In conclusion, the serum concentrations of zinc, copper and iron in various liver diseases showed different distributions.
